COVID-19 and Uniform Handout Update

Dear McCormick Ranch Little League Community,

For more than 75 years, Little League has been the premier local community provider of baseball and softball opportunities to millions of boys and girls of all abilities.  This Spring we will once again be offering the chance for kids to participate in Little League® right here in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, AZ; a tradition dating back to 1961!  We are so glad to have you as part of our local community!

We value everyone’s health and well-being in our community and therefore wanted to reach out to you to let you know that MRLL is taking the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) seriously.  We will follow the guidelines set by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, our state’s public health department, and other local authorities in addition to Little League International.

***UPDATE***** THE INFORMATION BELOW HAS BEEN UPDATED BY THE MORE RECENT NEWS OF POSTPONEMENT OF ALL ACTIVITIES UNTIL APRIL 6th.***

Some of immediate decisions we’ve made as an organization include the following:

Sunday March 15th Uniform Distribution and PCA Workshop

This Sunday (March 15th), we still plan to hand out team hats and jerseys to all players who stop by the Mountain View Community Center (8625 E Mountain View Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85258). However, the uniform distribution will be conducted outside the MVCC as a precautionary measure.

Unfortunately, we will not be holding the player ("Triple Impact Competitor") workshop or our parent ("Be a Second-Goal Parent") workshop facilitated by our good partners at Positive Coaching Alliance.

We ask that all Tee ball and Farm team members/parents to arrive between 3:15 and 4pm to pick up your child’s uniforms.  If you are not able to join us on Sunday, your coach will distribute player uniforms prior to their first game.

Majors and Minors teams' players/parents are asked to arrive between 4:15 and 4:45pm to pick up your uniforms on Sunday at the MVCC.  Again, if you are not able to join us on Sunday, your coach will distribute player uniforms prior to their first game.

Sunday March 15th Jr. Umpire Training

The junior umpire training set up for Sunday, March 15th at Cochise Elementary Silver Field (SE Corner of Mt View and 84th Street) is still scheduled to take place. All Jr. Umpires should plan to get started at 4:00 pm and it should be done by 5:00 pm.

Games Begin Next Week

At this time, MRLL is still planning to start the season next week, beginning with games on Tuesday, March 17th, as scheduled.  If you have concerns with your child participating in games or practices, please contact your coach directly.

Furthermore, in terms of the games and practices, due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) and in accordance with guidance from the health authorities, MRLL is implementing some new, mandatory health and safety procedures as part of a proactive approach to preventing the spread of germs.

Throughout the MRLL, we are adopting these new measures effective immediately. We cannot stress enough how vital it is that all MRLL participants adhere to these guidelines.

“No-Contact/No-Handshake” Policy

MRLL is immediately instituting a precautionary “no-contact, no-handshake policy” to be observed at every level of the organization until further notice. This includes all physical contact and extends to customary game-related activities, such as pre-game coaches’ handshakes, umpire-coach introductions, and post-game handshakes between members of opposing teams. Instead, staff, players and coaches should use verbal queues, such as “tipping of the caps” and saying, “good game,” without shaking hands, high-fiving or fist-bumping.

Maintain Good Hygiene Practices

All MRLL volunteers, participants and fans should be aware of the coronavirus risk and take the necessary precautions to avoid exposure to germs. This includes maintaining good hygiene practices. We strongly recommend the following:

  • Wash your hands often, using soap and water for at least 20 seconds each time
  • If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol; this is suggested after any physical contact with another person or with a shared surface
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Cover your mouth and nose – with a tissue, if possible – when coughing or sneezing, then properly discard the tissue in the trash
  • Avoid close contact with anyone else who is coughing or sneezing or who is otherwise sick
  • Avoid spitting (e.g. seeds, saliva, etc.) in public
  • Clean or disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

Advice from the CDC

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has a specific Q&A regarding the virus in children:

Q: Are children more susceptible to the virus that causes COVID-19 compared with the general population and how can infection be prevented?

A: No, there is no evidence that children are more susceptible...

- see here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/specific-groups/children-faq.html

We will provide updates related to these new measures or let you know about any additional precautions to take if and when they become necessary. We appreciate your cooperation in following these new procedures as we work together to maintain the highest health and safety standards as a Little League community.

At this time, MRLL is still planning to hold our Opening and Picture Day events on Saturday, March 21stWe will make minor modifications, again based on guidance from health authorities, to ensure these events are as safe and fun as possible.  However, the MRLL Board will continue to monitor the situation and may elect to make further changes to the program and event and will let this community know.

If you have any questions regarding an event in which your child is scheduled to participate, please contact your head coach.

Sincerely,

MRLL Board
